Joint Research Centre, European Commission – JRC
The mission of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC-IES) is to provide scientific-technical support to the European Union's policies for the protection and sustainable development of the European and global environment. JRC- IES is a European reference centre for environmental science and technology and actively supports the enlargement and integration process of the European Union through targeted activities. At IES a number of models were developed and are hosted to monitor the environment at the European and global level (climate change, hydrology, agriculture, forests, pollution of soil, air and water, etc.).
Research groups in the institute are engaged in land use modelling covering a wide range of environments (from urban to rural), in sustainability analysis and impact assessment of European policies targeting the environment (biofuels, water, nitrates, agriculture, etc.). Activities on biodiversity and ES form part of the working program of the BIOMES Action. This Action supports scientifically the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020, in particular the target that aims to maintain or restore ecosystems and their services. To this end, BIOMES maps ES at the European scale and coordinates the PEER-PRESS initiative which aims to provide methodologies for spatial ES assessments at multiple spatial scales. BIOMES is a partner in several FP7 projects of which the activities are relevant for this proposal, most notably in VOLANTE, LiveDiverse, BESAFE and BIOFRESH.
