Helmholtz-Zentrum fur Umweltforschung GMBH – UFZ (Germany)
The UFZ is a leading European research centre for strategic research on biodiversity and ES and for applied environmental research to underpin policy and management. The UFZ has a strong focus on interdisciplinary research involving ecologists, economists, social and legal scientists and coordinates several large scale research projects on ES (such as GLUES, LEGATO and the scientific coordination of TEEB). UFZ is involved in several science-policy interfaces on environmental issues/ biodiversity from the national to the international level and participates actively in science-policy processes (IPBES, EPBRS, EEA Advisory Board, IPCC reviewers).
Since its foundation in 1991 the UFZ has participated in more than 130 EC funded projects. In FP6 UFZ was involved in 48 projects coordinating three Integrated Projects, two STREPs, two ESTs, one RTN, one SFC, and five TOKs. At present, the UFZ is participating, or in grant agreement negotiations, for 32 Cooperative Projects within FP7, eight of them are coordinated by UFZ. Additionally, the UFZ hosts two ERC grants, one starting grant and one advanced grant, five Marie Curie Individual fellowships and is coordinating three ITNs. Various TEEB follow-up projects are coordinated at UFZ, including the national TEEB-study for Germany.
