OpenNESS in ESP Regional Conference Latin America
Four scientists of the OpenNESS case study "Biofuel farming and restoration of natural vegetation in the Sao Paulo region" participated in the ESP Regional Conference Latin America that took place in Cali, Colombia from October 18th to 22th. David Lapola, Jörg Priess, Gleiciani Roberto and Moara Teixeira all had oral presentations of different aspects of the Brazilian case study, which investigates the feasibility of a Payment for Ecosystems Services (PES) in a municipality within Brazil’s sugarcane belt.
It was a great experience, where the scientists could exchange knowledge with other researchers, namely from Latin American countries on different issues of ecosystem services and natural capital. They also established contacts with others researchers from Brazil, who showed interest to contribute to the case study.
The conference also provided an opportunity for attendants to visit an already implemented PES scheme, which focus in the recovering of the Cali river. This field trip was particularly important to this OpenNESS case study given that the PES scheme that is being planned in Brazil’s sugarcane belt will also aim at water-related ecosystem services.
