Final OpenNESS Annual Meeting in Smolenice, Slovakia

OpenNESS at the Belgian Ecosystem Services Community Christmas market

There was a lot of networking and exchanging going on at the Belgian Ecosystem Services Community (BEES) Christmas market. For the first time in its three years existence BEES organized this national event to share knowledge and practices on ecosystem services. Over 100 participants from research, practice and government agencies gathered at the University of Liège campus Agro-Bio Tech in Gembloux (Belgium) in a Christmas setting full of information stands. These presented Belgian research projects, education games, science-policy platforms, forest management, Natura 2000 and so forth.

The OpenNESS project contributed a European flavour to the event with a stand, which was combined by project partners ECNC and INBO, who presented the two Belgian case studies. Also, Ben Delbaere was invited to give a keynote speech, which was based on OpenNESS and how science can influence policy (read the full speech here).

In her opening words, Mrs Anne Teller of the European Commission – and closely involved in BEES – praised the setup of the event and hoped for a European version of it in the future.
