Final OpenNESS Annual Meeting in Smolenice, Slovakia

Jointly developing Oppla

The Oppla team (participants from OpenNESS and OPERAs developing a common platform) met on 20-21 October in Brussels to take stock of progress and agree next steps. Good progress was made since the previous meeting in Edinburgh last July, where the team focused on the business plan for developing Oppla. This is an important component in the process, as the platform will need to continue beyond the project life span as an independent entity. During the project period the secretariat for Oppla will be based on partner input. Once the projects are over, a stand-alone secretariat with private and other funding will run the platform for a range of users from policy, business and science.

At the meeting a logo was agreed for Oppla, which now forms the basis for developing a brand and branding guidance. As dissemination about Oppla is starting to increase, such branding is very much in need. Oppla was already presented during the Ecosystem Services Partnership conference in Costa Rica last September and further opportunities are coming soon. A flyer is created to support dissemination and a web page is under construction.

The meeting also looked at a number of ‘wire-frames’ (draft schemes for a possible website design and function) and made good proposals. These will now be further developed and then tested during events with potential users, such as during the OPERAs user board meeting on 6-7 November in Lisbon. The OpenNESS annual meeting, the ALTER-Net conference and the SME event next year will offer further feedback opportunities.

During part of the meeting the EC Project Officer from DG Research, Sofie Vandewoestijne, and Anne Teller from DG Environment sat in to witness our progress and give further feedback for ensuring effective development of Oppla.
